About the Utrechtse Heuvelrug

The Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park is a national park in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It is an ancient area that was formed during the Ice Age and it includes a variety of landscapes, of which the moraine is the most striking. Heathlands, sand drifts and floodplains are also part of the national park. After the Veluwe, the Heuvelrug is the largest forest area in the Netherlands.

It is a very densely populated area with high recreational pressure. The national park became a wolf territory for the first time in centuries in 2023. Since last year, the province also has its own pack of established wolves. The presence of wolves poses the necessary challenges. Due to an increase in national defense exercises on the Leusderheide, wolves were forced to seek their roost elders in the area. A number of conflicts occurred between wolves and dogs and wolves and humans.

About the Oostvaardersplassen

The history of the Oostvaarderplassen goes back 'only' to 1968. Before this year this land was sea, when large pools of water stood out prominently in the newly constructed Flevopolder. An industrial area was to be built there. There was no immediate need for it, so the marshland was sown with reeds and then left with rust. Nature took possession of the new land and possessed itself into a new wilderness.

About The Netherlands

‘God created the earth, the Dutch created Holland*’. The North Sea would have washed away the Netherlands if the Dutch had not built defenses to protect their country. 26% of the country is below sea level, with the lowest point almost 7 meters below sea level.

The Netherlands is only 42 thousand square km, which means you would need 235 of our country to cover the USA. The country has over 18 million inhabitants making it the second most densely populated country in the European Union with an average of 533 people per km2.

More than 45% of the surface of the Netherlands is agricultural land. Only 26% of the country consists of nature reserves. Due to the intensive use of the terrain, nature often has a multifunctional function: it is used for energy transmission, water buffer, recreation (walking, cycling, horse riding, yoga, events), timber harvesting and nature-inclusive agriculture.

And in the midst of this battle for space, about 100 wolves are living here.

*It is a controversial topic whether or not The Netherlands and Holland are interchangeable. Chat with a Dutchman or -woman while at the conference to find our why!
